French furniture designer
André Sornay belonged to a group of avant garde designers who broke away with classical forms and pushed forward neat and practical designs that reflected modern life. Renowned for his daring use of non-traditional techniques and materials, Sornay produced numerous highly functional and timeless pieces that have become known as “le style Sornay”. The most notable influence of the designer is his patented technique – cloutage, the decorative use of brass nails on the exterior of furniture panels, which is still widely adopted today. Another method patented by Sornay is the tigette system, an innovative system to produce modular furniture.
