Overview

3812 Gallery announces its participation in Taipei Dangdai Art & Designs 2024 for the first time this year. We will bring a solo exhibition, titled “Remembering Hsiao Chin’s Legacy: a Retrospective of Post-War Abstract Art Across East and West”. The idea is to commemorate and showcase Hsiao Chin’s most remarkable contributions and achievements in both the European and Chinese post-war abstract art scene. This exhibition is also an extension of the artist’s international museum exhibition tour that has taken place over the last few years, touring from Hong Kong (2018) to Shanghai, (2018) Paris (2019), Latvia (2020), Beijing (2021), London (2022), and Macau (2023), presenting the artist’s most iconic works from the 1960s to the present.

The Milan’s Punto Studio in 1960s will feature a collection of Hsiao Chin’s most iconic 1960s works created during Movimento Punto (Punto International Art Movements), including Contemplation (1962), Dancing Light 14 (1963) and Hope (1963), together with the finest examples of Hsiao Chin’s other works during his lifelong career that have been widely exhibited in respected international museums and major exhibitions such as La Sublimazione di Samantha-23 (1992), Transcending the Eternal Garden-6 (1993), the monumental work Samantha nel Giardino Eterno (1998), Hope (2021), including it presents an overview of the formation of his artistic language and his path of spiritual transcendence, embarked on since the early 1960s, crossing through the past 6 decades of his life.

Hsiao Chin was born in Shanghai in 1935 and is celebrated as a pioneer of modern abstract art. His father, Hsiao You-mei, was an esteemed figure of modern music in China, and his uncle, Wang Shih-chieh, was a prominent Chinese Republican politician and scholar. Hsiao Chin is widely recognised in both Eastern and Western art scenes for his major contribution to the development of Chinese modern abstract art.

Hsiao Chin had held more than 112 solo exhibitions and 62 group exhibitions, leaving his footprint all over the world. His works can be found in major collections including Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), M+ Museum (Hong Kong), Musée Guimet (Paris), National Galerie (Rome), Long Museum (Shanghai), Song Museum (Beijing) and MGM Chairman’s Collection (Macau).

As Hsiao Chin’s worldwide (including Taiwan) authorised plenipotentiary representative, 3812 Gallery has supported the artist in organising his major solo shows in recent years, including Mark Rothko Art Centre, Daugavpils, Latvia, Musee Guimet, Paris, Song Art Museum, Beijing, China Art Museum, Shanghai and MGM Theatre for Macao International Art Biennale 2023.
